The EEGLAB and ERPLAB toolboxes, used within the MATLAB environment, allow for the analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) data. The course aims to provide the skills needed for basic data analysis, while also offering the opportunity to understand theoretical aspects through practical examples. The topics covered will mainly include data preprocessing (signal filtering, re-referencing, removal/interpolation of noisy signal, segmentation, artifact removal, artifact correction with independent component analysis) and the computation of event-related potentials (ERPs). The EEGLAB and ERPLAB toolboxes can be downloaded free of charge, as can the MATLAB software (the latter using a University of Padova email address).

Course syllabus:

  1. Introduction to the Matlab environment and the EEGLAB and ERPLAB toolboxes
  2. Data loading in EEGLAB, signal filtering, offline electrical referencing
  3. Segmentation and epoch creation with EEGLAB and ERPLAB, electrode interpolation
  4. Detection of ocular artifacts and solutions for their correction in EEGLAB and ERPLAB
  5. Automation of analysis routines and grand average of event-related potentials in EEGLAB and ERPLAB
